Charles H. Morris Sr. honored with Mayborn Leadership Award 9/12/17

Charles H. Morris Sr., president and CEO of Morris Multimedia Inc., Savannah, Ga., was the recipient of the 2017 Frank W. Mayborn Leadership Award, presented Monday morning at the SNPA-Inland Annual Meeting.

The award is named for Texas newspaperman Frank Mayborn, whose foresight and guidance helped shape SNPA in the early 1950s and who served as president of SNPA from 1061 to 1962.

Health insurance premium increases invalidated under Open Meetings Act 9/5/17

An Alabama circuit judge has ruled that the state board governing education employees' health insurance violated the Open Meetings Act when it met in private before voting to jack up rates.

How far-reaching the ruling will be depends on whether it is appealed and upheld, said Dennis Bailey, longtime attorney for the Alabama Press Association.

Aspen Daily News sold 9/5/17

Dave Danforth, founder of the Aspen (Colo.) Daily News, announced that he has sold the newspaper he founded 39 years ago to a group of local investors led by David Cook, the acting publisher. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Eight members named to SNPA's new R&D Advisory Committee 9/5/17

SNPA has named eight members to its inaugural Research and Development Advisory Committee for 2017-18.

The committee will provide input on how to improve the value of SNPA memberships for R&D partners, according to Les Simpson, who will be nominated next Monday to become the next president of SNPA. Simpson is publisher of the Amarillo (Texas) Globe-News.

"These companies are vital to the success of not only our industry, but to SNPA as well," Simpson said. "Their participation at our meetings is vital to help us maintain quality programming and affordable costs for our members. We hope to help them find even more value for their investment in SNPA."

Second Street has announced the acquisition of Presslaff Interactive Revenue, a data-driven email marketing software and consulting business focused on the collection and use of first-party data for the media industry.

Nominated as SNPA president 9/5/17

Part of Les Simpson's plans for SNPA next year is to reassert the importance of newspapers' role in our society and develop strategies to improve the public's perception of the industry.

Simpson also is concerned about negativity within the industry. He remains positive about where newspapers are now and where they are heading, and he sees both challenges and opportunities in the newspaper world.
