Church directories generate 100% new revenue

Another entry from SNPA's Best Revenue Contest

Posted by

The Northern Virginia Daily in Strasburg, Va., generated $12,000 last year in 100 percent new revenue with three church directories.

Mike Gochenour, publisher of the 12,000-circulation paper, said: "The church directories not only generated revenue, but helped further develop a relationship with the pastors for future projects."

He said, "The price point was key – most of the churches in our area are very small with very small budgets as well.  We feel we can grow this project even more the next time, now that everyone has seen it."

The Northern Virginia Daily ran house ads to compile a free basic listing of the churches, which was the content. The directories also included one local story, and then the paper sold display ads.

Gochenour said. "We cover a three-county region, so we did one for each county. We only inserted it into the papers it covered, so the press run for each was relatively small compared to the revenue."

Great source of untapped revenue, and a true benefit to your local churches.

Would do well in the Bible Belt markets. Churches would love the exposure.

Again, not a new idea, but I'm impressed NVD has as much success closing sales with churches. We've not had a lot of success in this category except around Christmas and Easter services. Might be worth a re-try based on this.

Simple, but effective. 100% new revenue is something to be proud of.

This is a category of potential revenue that many of us either underestimate or fail to maximize. Good job!

I like that the reader would get all of the listing information and not just the enhanced or paid listings. Nice work building upwards from free to enhanced listings and display ads.
