Gannett has named Thomas Claybaugh as president of the Carolinas media operations, home to The Greenville (S.C.) News and Asheville (N.C.) Citizen-Times.

Claybaugh, a 26-year veteran of Gannett, was named to the permanent position following a brief term as interim publisher.

"I'm really excited to be here. In my almost 27 years I have never seen a bigger opportunity,"  Claybaugh told employees of the Greenville and Asheville papers. "I love what I do. I love our business. I love making a difference."

Michael G. Kane, president of the East Group for Gannett Co., Inc., parent company of the USA TODAY NETWORK, announced Claybaugh as president of the Carolinas media operations overseeing Greenville and Asheville.

"As you know, Tom has spent the last seven weeks in an interim role to gain understanding of both organizations and the communities they serve," Kane said. "He's ready to take the Carolinas to new levels."

Claybaugh most recently served as president of the Central New York markets based in Binghamton. He also has served in various management and sales leadership roles in Ohio, Maryland, New York and West Virginia.
