Gannett looks to ignite the return of the giant banner ad

Over the past few years, the banner ad, in all its shapes and sizes, has been seriously out of vogue as online advertisers have taken great pains to create ads that are "native." In-your-face ads are out as brands strive to blend in.

But Gannett Co. is unveiling a bold new ad placement that is very much in conflict with the "subtle is better" trend of the moment. USAToday.com and a slew of other Gannett sites have begun running what the company has dubbed Gravity ads, which are ads that take over a person's computer screen and shove a video ad – in many cases, a TV-spot – front and center.  Read more from The Wall Street Journal.
