Former Observer publisher named president of Novant Health Foundation

Ann Caulkins, who most recently served as the president and publisher of The Charlotte Observer for 12 years, has been named senior vice president of Novant Health and president of Novant Health Foundation. In this role, Caulkins will design and implement plans for sustainable and integrated philanthropy across all of Novant Health's markets. She will represent and work to increase the profile of the foundation within the communities Novant Health serves.

The Novant Health Foundation's philanthropic efforts inspire giving that supports programs and initiatives that have direct patient impact. Novant Health regional foundations focus on the critical needs in five areas: infants and children; cancer; heart and vascular; stroke and neuroscience; and research and education.

"With more than 35 years of experience in communications, she will be a tremendous asset to expanding the profile of the foundation and its great work throughout all of Novant Health's communities."

Prior to working with The Charlotte Observer, Caulkins served as the president and publisher of The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C., as well as advertising director and senior vice president of sales and marketing at The Herald-Leader in Lexington, Ky. Caulkins started her newspaper career at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in Fort Worth, Texas.
