Revenue ideas from first P2P video conference keep on giving

SNPA's Executive Development Committee launched its 2018 Publisher-to-Publisher "P2P" initiative this month with a video conference on Growing Revenue. Executives from more than 30 newspapers participated in the live event to talk about revenue ideas that were collected from the participants.

Two participants – from Tulsa and Richmond – reported back to SNPA about the way that this free video conference proved beneficial to their advertising sales teams.

Bill Masterson Jr., president and publisher of the Tulsa (Okla.) World, noted that his sales team viewed a recording of the video conference and voted on which ideas they would like to implement in Tulsa.  He said, "We think by getting the reps involved in the process, they will have more 'buy in' and we will – in turn – have better success."  Seven ideas presented during the conference call were selected by the team in Tulsa for implementation.

Committee chairman Tom Silvestri, president and publisher of the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch, said: "Our Advertising VP Jason Dillon reviewed all of the ideas with his management team and has a short list of about 14 ideas that have immediate legs."

"The ideas keep on giving," Silvestri said.

One of the ideas suggested during the video conference call is highlighted in this week's SNPA eBulletin.  Additional revenue-generating ideas from the call will be highlighted in future SNPA eBulletins.

The committee has seven more programs planned for 2018:

  • April 19 - Tactical cost-cutting
  • May 17 - Organizing your sales force
  • June 21 - Leveraging data to build audience and diversify revenue
  • July 19 - How your news coverage impacts your revenue
  • Sept. 20 - Creating a digital agency
  • Oct. 18 - Revisiting your organizational structure
  • Nov. 15 - Diversifying revenue for success

To participate, newspapers submit an idea – and in exchange for their one idea, they receive the entire collection.

SNPA Executive Director Edward VanHorn said: "This free program is designed to engage publishers who cannot travel to meetings because of budget or time constraints.  SNPA takes the program to them."
