Hearst Newspapers has named Mark Medici as executive vice president and chief marketing officer, a new position. Medici previously served as vice president of audience and newspaper operations at Cox Media Group. The announcement was made by Hearst Executive Vice President and COO Mark Aldam and Hearst Newspapers President Jeff Johnson. Medici will be based in Houston and will report to Johnson.

With more than 4,000 employees across the nation, Hearst Newspapers publishes 24 dailies and 64 weeklies, including the Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle, The New Haven Register and Albany Times Union. It also operates digital marketing services and directories businesses under the LocalEdge brand.

Medici will oversee the consumer marketing strategy for all Hearst Newspapers across platforms, as well as directly oversee consumer revenue and marketing for the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News, where he will work closely with those respective publishers.

"Mark is one of the most respected executives in our industry, with a tremendous track record of executing strategies to drive audience engagement and consumer revenue, and great insights in the use of data and marketing to grow and retain readers," Johnson said.

"I am honored to join the Hearst Newspapers group," Medici said. "Hearst's reputation for protecting and informing its local communities is unmatched in our industry and so is its commitment to growing and retaining readers. In this new role, I look forward to working across the group to drive emerging digital consumer revenue streams while maintaining strong print fundamentals."

Prior to his seven years at Cox Media Group (2011 to 2018), Medici spent four years at A.H. Belo (2007 to 2011) as vice president of audience for The Dallas Morning News. From 1997 to 2007, he worked at Advance Publications as an outside sales representative and later became director of audience for The Oregonian.

Medici holds a bachelor's degree in American History from the University of Washington.
