Hearst has announced that Michael Palmer has been named chief information security officer. The announcement was made by President and CEO Steven R. Swartz and Chief Operating Officer Mark Aldam. Palmer will report to Chief Information Officer Mahendra Durai.

In his new role, Palmer will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing the risk and cybersecurity solutions that protect the data and information assets across Hearst.

Since 2014, Palmer has served as the first chief information security officer for the National Football League. In this role, Palmer oversaw the operations and continued expansion of the NFL's enterprise-wide information security strategy and program.

"As our business interests continue to expand, continuously upgrading our information security operations is an essential priority for Hearst," Aldam said. "Michael's innovative experience at the NFL and leadership within the cybersecurity industry uniquely prepares him to guide our continued investments to secure our data and information systems to protect our customers and business partners."

In 2009, Palmer was named director of shared services infrastructure communications before becoming director of information security in 2012. During his time with the league, Palmer led the development of security architecture for the NFL's television networks and digital channels. He also provided leadership during cornerstone events, such as directing cyber operations during the Super Bowl.

"Hearst has been, and continues to be, a leader across industries in activating technology to forge new paths forward for its many diverse businesses," Palmer said. "I look forward to working with the teams across business units as the company leverages ever-evolving technological innovations."

Palmer joined the NFL in 1997 as a senior engineer, moving up through the company for more than two decades. Additionally, he served as chair of the NFL's Information Security Risk Management Committee and a committee chair on the Diversity Council. Palmer holds a bachelor's degree in computer information systems from Baruch College.
