Log Cabin Democrat moves to new location

As 2019 approaches, longtime Conway, Ark., institutions – the city main offices and the 140-year-old newspaper – each will move locations.

The Log Cabin Democrat and its staff are moving from its current location on the first floor of the Federal Building on Main Street to its new spot at 1121 Front St.

The property, owned by Covington Real Estate Group, is a two-story, mixed-use complex with three 900-950 square feet apartments on the top floor looking over Front Street.

The LCD will occupy the first floor of two suites in the complex.

Publisher Kelly Sublett said the newspaper and its staff plans to be settled in the new space by Dec. 5.

"We will be physically moving the week after Thanksgiving and into the [space] the first weekend of December," she said. "Barring any last-minute, significant issues, we should be right on schedule."

Sublett said Covington Properties and Covington Construction "have been incredible" and have moved quickly to get the LCD in on time.

"The square footage will not change drastically, but the floor plan will certainly fit our needs better," she said. "We had an opportunity to design a space that will enhance customer service and newsroom security, which is a necessary consideration."

The publisher noted access for customers and sales and circulation departments would not change, but the "concept of an open newsroom," is "no longer appropriate," hence the need for the design alterations.

"That doesn't mean reporters will not be accessible," Sublett said. "It simply means more consideration will be given to their schedules and safety when interacting with the public."
