Shawn Stinson has joined The Sanford (N.C.) Herald's newsroom as managing editor, Publisher Bill Horner III has announced.

Stinson, 45, comes to The Herald from The Richmond County Daily Journal in Rockingham, where for the last seven years he's served as sports editor and managing editor. He's also worked as a radio producer and writer for stations in Charlotte and as an editor at other newspapers in Indiana and Kentucky.

While at the Daily Journal, he won recognition from the N.C. Press Association for his work covering NASCAR and golf.

Stinson will oversee the day-to-day operations of the newsroom and direct coverage for The Herald, its website and social media.

"We're very fortunate to have Shawn join the staff," Horner said. "He brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the position and great ideas, as well. He was admired and very respected by the staff in Rockingham and the members of the community I spoke to about him."

Along with Stinson's addition, Horner announced that veteran Herald Reporter Zach Potter will be promoted to the position of news editor in February. He'll replace longtime editor Jennifer Gentile, who's moving with her husband, Dave, to Charlotte next month for his new position with the Air National Guard. Dave Gentile is currently serving with the 440th Airlift Wing based at Ft. Bragg.
