Fred Scheller, a veteran newspaper executive, has been appointed publisher of The Daily Star in Oneonta, N.Y.

Scheller comes to Oneonta from Pennsylvania where he served as assistant general manager and audience director for The Daily Item in Sunbury. Both newspapers are owned by Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc.

"We're confident Fred Scheller's extensive print, digital, management and leadership experience will be an asset to The Daily Star and its market," said Steve McPhaul, executive vice president and chief operating officer of CNHI. "He has been a top-performer in the community newspaper field for more than 30 years."

Scheller started his newspaper career in Pennsylvania as a part-time employee in the Sunbury Daily Item's distribution department in 1976, and rose through a succession of promotions to become the director of audience development and assistant general manager, three years ago.

He was actively involved in the local business and civic communities, including helping to create the Sunbury River Festival that raised more than $200,000 for revitalization projects in the city. He was also involved in youth organizations, coaching soccer, basketball and Little League Baseball.

"The Daily Star is a great newspaper with a 125-year tradition of noteworthy service to its readers with strong news content, to its advertisers with effective results, and to the communities it serves with programs that build progress and pride," said Scheller. "My ambition is to continue to grow that tradition."
