Hearst sees increase in mobile app revenue with saambaa

Posted

In a recent article published by the Newspaper Association of America, James Smith, chief digital revenue officer for Hearst's San Antonio Express-News, said the paper began seeing revenue increase almost immediately after launching with saambaa. In less than a year, the app's revenue gains have already covered the cost, time and effort put into the app, he added.

In addition to building revenue, Smith noted that saambaa has enabled them to deliver a great experience to a Millennial audience that they did not reach in the past. Those users have also become regular readers of the newspaper's desktop and mobile platforms.

Saambaa repackaged the Express-News' local entertainment content such as:

  • Events
  • Food
  • Arts
  • Sports
  • Movies
  • Music

The app also gives users the ability to share local listings with friends through a built-in private group messaging function.

"Our platform has become an extension of their digital offerings," said Matt Voigt, saambaa co-founder. "The Express-News has gained thousands of users in a short time, with very high engagement."

Saambaa's platform is Plug-N-Play with no cost (only rev share).  Brands like Tribune, Scripps and Hearst have all chosen saambaa.

Matt Voigt is the co-founder and CEO of saambaa, where he and his team are helping print media companies develop an engaged and monetizable, mobile audience by transforming their local entertainment listings.  Venture-funded by the Knight Foundation, saambaa partners include Hearst, Tribune and 40+ more across the country.  Voigt graduated from Loyola University Chicago.
