Gregg Ireland, publisher of the Topeka (Kan.) Capital-Journal, is retiring after 30 years in the newspaper industry.  The announcement was made by Derek May, executive vice-president of Morris Publishing Group.

Ireland began his newspaper career in 1985 in the Topeka Capital-Journal's finance department as an internal auditor.  He later held various positions including controller before being named publisher in 2011.

"Gregg Ireland has been a great leader and publisher, rising up through our company ranks," said William S. Morris III, chairman and CEO of Morris Communications Co.  "He has made wonderful contributions to the Topeka community and to our company."

"It has been great to know and work with Gregg over the years. My family and I wish him and his family well in the future."

As publisher, Ireland oversaw the outsourcing of the printing and a complete redesign of the Capital-Journal in 2013.

"During his career, Gregg has performed many key roles with excellence, both for Morris Publishing Group and Stauffer Communications," said Derek May.  "As publisher of the Topeka Capital-Journal, he has been a champion for the important role journalism plays in the community. "

"My wife Carol and I plan to stay in the Topeka area," said Ireland.  "Our son Ezekiel lives at Parsons State Hospital, our daughter Jessie attends Washburn University and our daughter Jackie attends Washburn Rural High School.  I have enjoyed my time at the Capital-Journal."
