Virginian-Pilot names Steve Gunn new top editor

Posted

Steve Gunn, editor of Capital Gazette Communications in Annapolis, Md., will become the top editor of The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va., effective June 8.

He will succeed Denis Finley, who served as The Pilot's editor for a decade before leaving in March. Katrice Hardy, the paper's managing editor, has led the newsroom in the interim.

Unlike his immediate predecessors, Gunn has no past experience at The Pilot. But he used to work for its parent company.

Landmark Media Enterprises LLC, the Norfolk-based publisher of The Pilot, owned Capital Gazette until its sale last year to Baltimore Sun Media Group. Capital Gazette includes The Capital, a daily newspaper in Annapolis; four other publications; and a website.

The Pilot's publisher, Pat Richardson, announced his selection last Thursday. She supervised Gunn for 1-1/2 years when she was publisher at The Capital. Richardson praised his knack for nurturing talent, his efforts to connect with the community and his embrace of local and enterprise news, as well as new digital strategies.

Combined, she said, they helped reverse circulation declines and increase website visits. Read more from The Virginian-Pilot
