Judith M. Burns, president and publisher of the Index-Journal in Greenwood, S.C., has named Ed Gunderson as chief executive officer of the company. Gunderson has served as the newspaper's advertising director since 2014. As CEO, Gunderson will report directly to the publisher.

Gunderson's duties will include management of all company operations and development of strategic plans to achieve company goals.

Gunderson has more than 20 years' experience in newspaper management in Massachusetts and Connecticut, including positions as advertising director and publisher. In 2009 he was owner and publisher of a startup company, which launched six successful weekly newspapers serving six neighboring towns in Connecticut. He sold the publications to new owners in 2012.

"Ed understands all aspects of the newspaper industry. He has been a publisher, advertising director and an owner. I am fortunate to have a person with his experience to lead and direct our existing newspaper management team," Burns said. "I'm glad he decided to move south from New England to get away from the cold and snow."

She added, "With his guidance, the Index-Journal will continue to expand our services to readers and businesses in Greenwood and neighboring communities."

Gunderson earned his B.A degree in marketing at the University of Southern Florida. He is also a graduate of the American Press Institute Management Program. His hobbies include sailing and golf. He was a PGA golfer from 1979-86.

"It's an exciting time in the newspaper industry," Gunderson said. "I look forward to leading the Index-Journal through the changes necessary to continue to be the media leader in this market. Greenwood is a unique and growing area, and this newspaper recognizes the many new opportunities that are available in media today. We will be utilizing our many years of journalism experience, alongside new digital and print opportunities, to continue to serve our readers and advertisers in the coming years. Like I said, these are exciting times."
