"Islam for Journalists: A Primer on Covering Muslim Communities in the U.S." now is available from the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute.  It presents the work of top academic experts on Islam, along with essays from reporters from The New York Times, The Tennessean and other news organizations who have covered local stories involving Muslims in America.

The lead editor is Lawrence Pintak, former CBS News Middle East correspondent and founding dean of The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University. His co-editor is former Chicago Tribune Middle East correspondent Stephen Franklin.

Chapter titles include:

  • "The Many Faces of Islam: Cultural Unity and Diversity in the Muslim World" by Robert W. Hefner
  • "Islam's Hard Edge: Fundamentalism and Jihad" by Charles Kurzman
  • "South Asian Islam: Conflict and Change" by Syed Javed Nazir
  • "Women and Islam" by Shereen el Feki
  • "Digital Islam" by Philip N. Howard

"Islam for Journalists" was designed and produced as an e-book by Roger Fidler of the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute. The Social Science Research Council and the Carnegie Corporation of New York funded the project.

The primer is a free download in the RJI Digital Newsbook Catalog, which includes e-books produced at RJI for the Center for Public Integrity, The New York Times, Tampa Bay Times, The Washington Post and other news organizations.

The e-book is a sequel to "Covering Islam in America," a Poynter Institute course produced by Pintak and Franklin.
