After 53 years of publishing The State Journal (Frankfort, Ky.), Dix Communications has announced that the company will sell the newspaper to Boone Newspapers, Inc.

State Journal Publisher Ann Dix Maenza told The State Journal staff, some with 30 or more years at the publication, that Dix Communications would sell The State Journal and several other properties to focus on the company's Ohio properties.

The company made the official announcement of the pending sale of Frankfort Publishing Company, which publishes The State Journal and its related websites and publications, to Boone Newspapers, Inc. of Tuscaloosa, Ala.

G. Charles Dix II, president of Dix Communications, owner of The State Journal, said the two companies have signed letters of intent and are "moving toward the completion of a purchase agreement," with an expected closing on or around Sept. 1.

Todd Carpenter, president and CEO of Boone Newspapers, Inc. said the company is pleased and honored to succeed the Dix organization.

"We are publishers by practice and background, not financial investors," Carpenter said in a memo to The State Journal staff.

"Our interest in succeeding the Dix organization in Frankfort is and has been driven by the knowledge of an excellent group of experienced newspaper people already in place at The State Journal."
