Mega-Conference speaker named Tennessean of the Year

Michael Burcham – who will be addressing the Key Executives Mega-Conference next month – has been named Tennessean of the Year.

Burcham will address the Mega-Conference on Tuesday morning, Feb. 24, with a look at "The Next Big Thing: Three Must Do's to Allow Innovation in Your Organization – and Why You Want to Do This."

Later that morning he will lead an Innovation Workshop during a break-out session.  This break-out session will be offered twice that morning – to give workshop participants two opportunities to choose this conference option.  During the workshop, he'll share with participants the tools and processes needed to think through ideas so they have a chance of being implemented.

Regarding his Tennessean of the Year Award, an article in The Tennessean notes that Burcham "had sold his latest health care company for a nine-figure sum, and the non-compete agreement keeping him from building another business was about to expire. But in spring 2010 the Affordable Care Act was passed by Congress, disrupting his plans for a fourth health care venture.

"The timing proved to be a godsend for Nashville, Tenn. Instead of starting another company, Burcham accepted the chief executive position at the Nashville Entrepreneur Center and built a nonprofit that has since helped more than 130 start-ups launch. Those start-ups have yielded more than $100 million in revenue, spurring more than 1,000 jobs. In that role, he has ushered in a new era for small businesses in Nashville and put the city on the national stage for its start-up community that has exploded in the past five years.

"For that legacy and for his impact on economic development in Nashville, Burcham has been named Tennessean of the Year."

Recently, it was announced that Burcham is stepping down from his role as CEO of the Nashville Entrepreneur Center, which he has led since its founding in 2010, to pursue a "new opportunity in the private sector." He has previously said he plans to launch a health care company, specifically one focused on death with dignity. (Read more about this.)
