Bierbauer to step down as dean of College of Information and Communications

Charles Bierbauer, the University of South Carolina's longest-serving current dean, will step down as dean of the College of Information and Communications at the end of the academic year.

Bierbauer joined the University of South Carolina in 2002 following a distinguished 30-year career in journalism, most notably working as a correspondent for ABC News and CNN. He was the first dean of the newly merged College of Mass Communications and Information Studies (now the College of Information and Communications).

Provost Joan Gabel praised Bierbauer's tenure as dean, which has included expanding degree options for students, championing Cocky's Reading Express and shepherding the renovation of the former Health Sciences building on Sumter Street. Through his vision and fundraising efforts, the School of Journalism and Mass Communications is now housed in a state-of-the-art facility near the Horseshoe that includes a modern broadcasting studio. Major improvements also were made to Davis College, which houses the School of Library and Information Science, during his tenure.

In addition to teaching and moderating many important university events, Bierbauer served as the interim vice president for communications in 2009-10.

The university will soon launch a national search for a new dean of the college, Gabel said.
