Julie Beer appointed editor of Goshen News

Julie Crothers Beer, an education reporter at the Goshen (Ind.) News for the last two years, has been promoted to editor of the newspaper.

Beer is the first woman editor of the Goshen News, which is one of the oldest businesses in northern Indiana. The paper, through its predecessors, dates to 1837.

Prior to the Goshen News, Beer worked as a reporter for The Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne, and the Martinsville Reporter-Times. She is also a former copy editor at the Columbus Republic.

Goshen News Publisher Brian Bloom praised Beer for her leadership ability, and her digital and print journalism skills.

"She's proven herself to be an extraordinary performer," said Bloom. "She will take The Goshen News to a new level of community journalism."

Beer said she's excited with the opportunity to lead the paper's news team. She said a priority is to broaden the paper's reach in the community by engaging readers online and in print. To do that, she said, the staff needs "to spend more time telling the stories of people in the community" and encouraging residents to share their photos and stories with the paper.

Beer is a native of Syracuse, Ind., and a graduate of Franklin College. She is married to Travis Beer, project manager of Beer & Slabaugh Inc., a family-owned commercial construction company.
