Atkins joined the Chronicle in January 2012 after retiring from the Air Force as a lieutenant general in charge of NORAD Alaska.

"The Augusta Chronicle is postured for the future, and the team that produces the award-winning newspaper is ready to step in and continue this era of excellence and service to our community. I sincerely appreciate all the friends and professional associates I have had the privilege to meet and work alongside," he said.

Atkins said he plans to relocate to northern Virginia. Born in Portland, Ore., Atkins, 61, was a command pilot with more than 4,000 hours in fighter aircraft, flying as a demonstration pilot for both the European A-10 demonstration team and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.

"Dana Atkins has provided strong and effective leadership for The Augusta Chronicle for the last four years. His time in Augusta has been beneficial for both The Chronicle and the community. His management has made The Chronicle a better newspaper," said Chronicle Publisher and Morris Communications Chairman William S. Morris III. "He has given of his time and energy to the community in many ways. Dana has made the decision to now spend more time with his family and new grandchildren. We respect his wishes and will miss him very much."

"I feel fortunate to have been able to work with Dana over the past four years," said May. "He's a man of high integrity and an impeccable work ethic.  Through his leadership, we have made great strides at Chronicle Media."
