Reading Eagle Company, which includes a daily newspaper in Pennsylvania, the Reading Eagle; WEEU 830 AM; South Schuylkill News; Pretzel City Productions and its commercial printing subsidiary REP, has announced a decision made by the company's Board of Directors to seek bankruptcy protection.

Year in review: Transaction volume increases for fourth straight year 1/15/19

The number of deals involving daily newspapers continued its upward trajectory in 2018, with 36 separate transactions closed by year end.

It was the largest number of daily newspaper deals since 2000, and the fourth straight year of higher transaction volume.

The two key drivers of this activity were largely unchanged from the prior year: owners of clusters of publications seeking to build larger regional footprints, and the difficulties faced by small operators lacking the scale needed to manage expenses.

Adams Publishing Group acquires Wisconsin newspapers 12/4/18

Brian Knox, president of W. D. Hoard & Sons Company, has announced that the newspaper division of the company has been sold to Adams Publishing Group. The Daily Jefferson County Union and the affiliated Hometown News Limited Partnership publish 13 community newspapers and shoppers, stretching across parts of six counties in south central Wisconsin.

Watertown Times sold to Adams Publishing Group 12/3/18

James M. Clifford has announced that the Watertown (Wis.) Daily Times and Dodge County Independent News have been sold to Adams Publishing Group. The Watertown Daily Times is published Monday through Friday and the Dodge County Independent News weekly. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Paxton Media Group acquires Kentucky New Era 12/3/18

The Kentucky New Era Group has sold its daily newspaper in Hopkinsville and four non-daily newspapers to Paducah-based Paxton Media Group.

Dirks, Van Essen, Murray & April, a media merger and acquisition firm based in Santa Fe, N.M., represented Kentucky New Era Group in the transaction. Terms were not disclosed.

Tyler Morning Telegraph being acquired by M. Roberts Media 11/28/18

After more than a century of continuous family ownership and management by the Clyde and Bothwell families, the daily Tyler (Texas) Morning Telegraph is changing owners.

The paper is being acquired by M. Roberts Media, a family-owned newspaper group that operates the Longview News-Journal, Marshall News Messenger, Panola Watchman and the Victoria Advocate in Texas. The new ownership took effect Dec. 1.

Local group acquires daily Trinidad Chronicle-News 11/6/18

A newly formed local group has acquired the Trinidad (Colo.) Chronicle-News, a five-day-a-week publication that has served Trinidad and surrounding communities since 1877. The former owners, Shearman Company in Lake Charles, La., had owned the newspaper for 75 years.

The Greensheet, which has been published in Houston for 48 years, has entered into a preliminary agreement to be sold to McElvy Media Group. The transaction is targeted to close Sept. 1.

CNHI explores sale of newspaper company 6/25/18

CNHI, LLC, one of the country's leading providers of local news and information, said Monday it is exploring the sale of its newspaper properties in 22 states.

The announcement was made after its parent company, Raycom Media Inc., reported it has signed an agreement to be acquired by Gray Television group, a public company headquartered in Atlanta. The transaction does not include CNHI's more than 100 newspapers (68 dailies and more than 40 non-dailies).
