The five newspapers in BH Media's Alabama Group signed up 77 new advertising accounts in about six weeks last year through an in-house sales competition called "Let's Play Takeaway."
The goal is to win new accounts away from competitors and regenerate inactive accounts. Advertising representatives compete among themselves for prizes ranging from $75 for the person bringing in the second-highest number of new accounts up to $500 for the salesperson who generates the highest amount of new revenue.

Rick Thornton, who had been an editor and a vice president at the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch, was named vice president of news for BH Media Group.MORE
Gloria Fletcher, a native Oklahoman who was president of Sound Publishing Inc. in Everett, Wash., has been named president and publisher of the Tulsa World.MORE
Contests conducted by BH Media Group papers have three goals: generating revenue, collecting email addresses for local newspaper databases and fostering reader engagement. With the help of a team at the corporate headquarters, the company's papers in 10 states are bringing in new and incremental revenue with contests.MORE
The deal isn't yet finished. But Ken Doctor says he has been told by multiple sources that there are no major stumbling blocks left to negotiate in a megamerger between the United States' two largest daily newspaper chains – Gannett and GateHouse. It's increasingly likely to happen, with an announcement by summer's end. That's despite absolute public silence from the companies involved.
