McClatchy has named Mike Fannin as regional editor for the Midwest Region. Fannin, currently executive editor and vice president of The Kansas City Star, will continue to lead the The Kansas City Star and oversee three additional newsrooms including The Wichita Eagle in Kansas, the Belleville News-Democrat in Illinois, and the Star-Telegram in Fort Worth, Texas.MORE
McClatchy has announced a new regional structure for news and named Robyn Tomlin and Lauren Gustus as regional editors. Tomlin, currently managing editor at The Dallas Morning News, will be based in Raleigh, N.C., and will be responsible for the seven McClatchy newsrooms in the Carolinas. Gustus, currently executive editor of McClatchy's Star-Telegram in Fort Worth, Texas, will be based in Sacramento and will be responsible for McClatchy's five California newsrooms plus The Idaho Statesman in Boise. They will begin in their new roles in February.MORE
Sean Burke has been appointed by McClatchy as president and publisher of the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram. He succeeds Gary Wortel, who was promoted to lead McClatchy's West Region in March and is now president and publisher of The Sacramento Bee. Burke previously served as president and publisher for GateHouse Media New England.
In addition, Lauren Gustus, executive editor at the Fort Collins Coloradoan, will become the Star-Telegram's new vice president and executive editor, replacing Jim Witt, who retired last fall. Gustus will start June 19.MORE
Two weeks after 17 people died in the mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla., Julie Anderson joined the South Florida Sun Sentinel as editor-in-chief. In her first conversation with her managing editor, Anderson asked how the staff was doing.
"Really be mindful that your reporters and your editors are going to be traumatized," Anderson said. "Maybe not all of them, but they're first responders, too."
