The Wilson (N.C.) Times is demonstrating that a simple idea – done well – can be better at getting results than the glitziest new promotion rolled out with all the bells and whistles.

In early July, at www.wilsontimes.com, The Times began to publish mug shots, names and ages of people arrested on felony charges in the city of Wilson and Wilson County, located about 30 miles east of Raleigh, N.C. Though introduced with little fanfare, the database feature has quickly become an important driver of page views at the website. On at least one day since its launch, views of the list of accused felons accounted for 50 percent of total page views of the whole site.
